ABOUT MY SCULPTURE
There is magic in the shapes of the high desert woods! Stone carvers will tell you about the stone speaking to them. In the same way the life energy that was once expressed in the living tree speaks to me through its sculptural form. In the lumberyard the sculptural nature of the wood is sliced away into rectangular, mathematical configurations. Obliterated are the effects of the life forces left in the allegedly dead wood, the complex flowing character, the enormous variety of colors and grains, and the intense sensuality.
More recent work includes limited edition bronze castings of wood sculptures. The original idea in wood takes on a new persona in metal. And it can be reconfigured into more complex sculpture such as enlargements and multiple constructions. There are endless possibilities with metal finishes and chemical patinas. This medium greatly expands my capability to explore form, dimension and environments, which enhance the work.
